TruexCullins was retained by the Town of Stowe to provide a design for a new multi-purpose 44,600 sf ice arena to replace the aging Jackson Arena. The style of the arena is reminiscent of Alpine lodges, barns, or outbuildings, and the design seeks to provide detail and scale to the large scaled-building mass through eave bracket details, a cedar wood-lined entryway, and three steel and wood canopies that provide shelter at the front walk, break up the façade mass, and announce the festive nature of the ice arena with the flag masts integrated into the columns.
The interior program includes an entry lobby with views into the arena, a pro shop, snack bar, and a community meeting room, in addition to the requisite functions of team rooms, coaches’ rooms, referees’ rooms, and grandstand. A mezzanine level has space devoted to the Town recreation program and offices, as well as space for future refreshment areas. The circulation around the rink is provided with marked lanes for walking. The mechanical system is a state-of-the-art energy efficient system. The landscape design strives to conceal the large mass of the rink into the wooded hillside of the site using native hard and softwood trees and understory plantings.
